AMERICAN director Steven Spielberg "genuinely regrets" that the shark population was "decimated" after the success of his 1975 film Jaws, he confided in an interview with a BBC show. The film is the story of a great white shark that attacks bathers at a resort on the east coast of the United States. The local police commander begins a dog hunt with the help of a marine biologist and a shark hunter. "I really regret that the shark population was decimated because of the book and the movie. I really, really regret it," the director confided to the BBC. Spielberg participated in the radio show Desert Island Discs, in which guests discover what music, book or luxury item they would take to a desert island. Asked how he would feel if he found himself on a deserted island surrounded by sharks, Spielberg replied: "That's my biggest fear. But I'm not afraid of being eaten by a shark, I'm afraid of the sharks resenting the sport fishing madness that has developed after the premiere of the film in 1975."
